The Blue Scarf...

A few weeks ago I was busy crocheting this scarf... and here is the end result! I love it - I really do!  A perfect match for the Urban Jungle beanie I made a few weeks ago...

I didn't use a pattern for this scarf, just sort of made it up as I went along.  You know, I'm still learning but if you fancy having a go at this scarf yourself, this is what I did.  Not a pattern exactly because I suspect if you make this you'll have a basic idea of how to go about doing it and I'm not exactly at the point of writing up a pattern.

The Blue Scarf

Abbreviations:

dc  Double Crochet

hdc  Half Double Crochet

Puff Stitch

Chain.  As many as you like to get the length you want.

1st row dc, turn.
then 5 rows hdc, turn.
then 1 row dc, turn.
2 rows hdc turn.
3 rows of puff stitch.

then do everything a mirror of what you just did before the puff stitch... so:

2 rows hdc
1 row dc
5 rows hdc
1 row dc to finish

Then I sewed it up to make an infinity scarf.  I guess you could add a fringe if you liked.

Happy Crocheting!

xx

Waterproof Mittens Tutorial

If you're anything like me, you might find yourself unprepared when the "real" winter strikes!  Here in the Netherlands we've had a really mild winter so far, we haven't even needed scarves and hats unless we've been outdoors for a while.  As a result, I haven't bought all the kit that goes with really cold weather like we've been experiencing, and if I'm honest, I don't see myself going out and buying waterproof ski clothing for a few days of snow!  As it is the girls would much rather be indoors with a mug of hot cocoa - they must have inherited their dislike of the cold from their parents!   Now we've had snow, and quite a bit of it....it's been hanging round for days and out of the blue my 6 year old tells me she hasn't taken part in any snowball fights at school because her gloves would get wet, leading to extra cold fingers.  Oops!  Bad Mummy Moment! Finding myself in a predicament I put the ol' thinking cap ...

I Channeled My Granny!

Yesterday the girls were off sick with a cold, and I can't say I was feeling 100% either.  My energy was low and when my eldest asked for soup for lunch, I admit, I did an internal sigh. I went to the cupboard and grabbed a couple of potatoes and an onion.. and that is when it happened.  That is when I began to channel my Italian Granny!  Seeing the potatoes and onions and thinking.. what else? What other something could I add to the soup to make it, well, soup. It was then I had a recollection from my childhood, a flash of an image, a forgotten smell, of a soup made up of the lowliest ingredients, that tasted so good, was warm and comforting and embodied everything a soup should be. My Granny's rice soup. By some twist of good fortune I had some left over rice in the fridge.  And as I searched through my memory the tantalising images came flooding back of Swiss Chard and perhaps, celery? So I set out to make it.. and as an afterthought, grabbed my camer...

Toffee Apples!

Each year around Halloween I like to make Toffee Apples.  They are so simple to make, yet for some reason they only make an appearance once a year - probably because they are cumbersome and tricky to eat and sticky toffee tends to go flying everywhere when you crunch into them.  Saying that, could you resist sinking your teeth into one?  I certainly couldn't  (well I had a civilised slice if I'm honest) and for those who know me, that is saying something as I don't eat sugar as a norm.   Some of the ingredients you'll need - I forgot to put vinegar and red food colouring on the counter - oops! The recipe says to pour boiling water over the apples to remove the waxy coating, you know how you can buff up an apple and make it shiny because it has a sort of waxy bloom on it?  Well that can prevent the toffee from sticking to the apple so it has to be removed.  Well that made my warning system go off, but anywa...
