Halloween....

Have you seen these Jello Worms all over Pinterest lately?  I knew I had to try them out - excellent fun and maximum gross out value don't you think?

I didn't have a milk carton, so used a water bottle to hold the straws.  A square milk carton would obv. have been a better choice but necessity and all that...
I was a bit nervous when I started making this... I'd bought what I thought was jelly whilst on holiday in Germany recently, but you know, not understanding German....the fact that it said "gelatin" in the list of ingredients gave me faith.  You know I haven't found proper Jelly here in the Netherlands... So,  I used a pack of German Jelly and a pack of gelatin and followed this  recipe, even though I had to fiddle about with the Jelly quantities...

Cherry flavour...super sour!

I was filled with trepidation at this point - you see the recipe calls for a certain amount of cream and when I mixed it in it separated and curdled slightly, although it tasted fine.  The beginning of grossness!  A few drops of green food colour created this rather disgusting colour.

Now for the "fun" part.  The advice is to squeeze the "worms" out of the straws using a rolling pin.  I didn't do that - I didn't have a suitable place to roll them on to and they were delicate man!  So I painstakingly ran a few straws under water then ran my fingers down the length of the straw to push the worm out.  This was HARD WORK.  I must have stood there for half an hour at least until I ended up with this!

There is no denying that these really do resemble worms!  My lovely husband took one look at them and declined to even taste one!

A wonderful bowl of worms....

I must admit, I gave up.  I stopped squeezing half way.  It was too time consuming and I suspected (rightly so) that these worms were a little bit too realistic to be enjoyed by the family.
The taste was also a problem, that Kirsch flavoured jelly was fairly sour, far too diluted and insipid.
Would I make these again, probably not.  Would I recommend you make these at least once in your life as a Halloween treat or April fool's joke?  Then yes, go for it!  Perhaps I used too skinny a straw - perhaps they needed to be the very fat kind?  And if I made these again, I'd use gelatin and a flavoured fruit juice along with a few drops of food colour, that would improve the taste and you'd actually want to eat it because it tasted good.

I Channeled My Granny!

Yesterday the girls were off sick with a cold, and I can't say I was feeling 100% either.  My energy was low and when my eldest asked for soup for lunch, I admit, I did an internal sigh. I went to the cupboard and grabbed a couple of potatoes and an onion.. and that is when it happened.  That is when I began to channel my Italian Granny!  Seeing the potatoes and onions and thinking.. what else? What other something could I add to the soup to make it, well, soup. It was then I had a recollection from my childhood, a flash of an image, a forgotten smell, of a soup made up of the lowliest ingredients, that tasted so good, was warm and comforting and embodied everything a soup should be. My Granny's rice soup. By some twist of good fortune I had some left over rice in the fridge.  And as I searched through my memory the tantalising images came flooding back of Swiss Chard and perhaps, celery? So I set out to make it.. and as an afterthought, grabbed my camer...

Gingerbread Houses

OK, I know I really should have shared this before Christmas but no sooner had I finished them than the Day was upon me and I had some kind of very odd 'flu' which left me with a fever on and off for days... in fact I fell asleep on the couch on Christmas morning and the lovely husband only woke me at 1pm.....with a whole Christmas "lunch" still to cook!  Guess I must have needed it though. And then there was work.  Yes indeed!  After the jolly holiday we set to work on my sewing room..... which never quite got completed as we went away for a few days over Old and New (quaint Dutch way of saying New Year's - I quite like it!) ... et cetera, et cetera.  But it is certain to be finished in the very near future and then I can reveal...... NOW, back to Gingerbread Houses. Nearly 2 years ago I made a choice to give up sugar (amongst other things).  It is the best thing I ever did but it left me with a small problem.  I LOVE making and decorating kids...

Contemplating Embroidery

OK, I have to admit, I got a bit carried away. I've come to realise that I can't do things in half measures, less is not more for me and I somehow can't do "simple" even if I start out thinking something will be "simple" it usually turns out not to be! I belong to a group of lovely, crafty women. We chat daily online about the stuff we are making, offer advice and encouragement.  We all have varying abilities and interests and are dispersed across Europe, from England and Scotland, to the Netherlands and Belgium.    In the beginning of 2012 we agreed to do an anonymous craft swap - the only conditions were that it would be something small and obviously hand made, and oh yes, it had to be done by Easter.    I got really excited.  I wasn't sure what I was going to make, but I started stealthily checking out my recipients Pinterest boards for clues, admiring her photos on face book to glean ideas of what she...
